EL MUSEO'S Young International Circle Dia de los Muertos Celebration : NEW YORK-OCTOBER 30:EL MUSEO'S Young International Circle Dia de los Muertos Celebration on Friday, October 30, 2009 at El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street, New York City, NY. El Museo del Barrio, New York City’s premier Latino and Latin American Art Museum, hosted its seventh annual Young International Circle (YIC) Benefit on Friday, October 30, 2009 from nine o’clock PM until one o’clock AM. The YIC Benefit was the first event in the newly renovated and reopened Museum, and for the first time ever, guests were invited to linger through El Museo’s galleries after dark. The YIC Benefit Chairs were Cromoto Atencio, Michel Heredia, and Gabriel Rivera-Barraza. Vice Chairs were Lara Alcantara, Ana Maria Celis, Ivonne Cohen, Karla Farach, Javier Figueroa, Cristina Lagorio, and Alexandra Wilkis-Wilson. Madrinas of the Young Internacional Circle are Mayra Hernandez, Jana Pasquel de Shapiro, and Samantha Thompson. This year’s honorary committee, all of whom were attendance included: Lara Blazed, Christian Cota, Carlos Campos, Liliana Dominguez, Karla Martinez, Raul Melgoza, Luisana Mendoza, Bibhu Mohapatra, Brian Reyes, Alexa Rodulfo, and Whitney Wolfe. The 2009 YIC benefit celebrated the age old traditions of Dia de los Muertos with a flavor of Carnaval. El Museo’s courtyard, covered by a giant tent, will feature several oversized installations of alters signifying Dia de los Muertos’ celebration of life after death. Decorated with tropical fruit, antifazes (masquerade masks), beads, feathers, and other Carnval inspired décor, the Latin evening featured several live Carnaval inspired performances including Samba dancers, a conga line, and Latin drummers. Antony Todd Inc. designed the event’s décor. Over five hundred international professionals, philanthropists and art aficionados flew in from Europe, North America, and South America to support the community and education programs at the museum. Guests enjoyed a Latin night of cocktails and dancing and an extensive silent auction. Jose Luis Pardo, lead singer of Los Amigos Invisibles also known as DJ Cheo provided the event’s music. Held at Cipriani 42nd Street, the evening honored Tony Award winner Lin Manuel Miranda; Luis Ubiñas of the Ford Foundation; and Gloria and Emilio Estefan. El Museo's gala was graced by the stellar presence of much of the Latin design and social world, and a surprise visit from Gov. and Mrs. Paterson to celebrate his birthday. Gala chairs Yaz and Valentin Hernandez and Isabel and Ruben Toledo were joined by designers Carolina Herrera, Jason Wu, Christian Cota, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Angel Sanchez and Brian Reyes; model Liliana Dominguez, and Triana Bautista (the first gypsy top model), and many more. In addition, El Museo kicked off sales of the whimsical portraits created by Ruben Toledo together with schoolchildren from East Harlem. Over a third of the portraits of Latino greats sold at the gala—including portraits of Diego Rivera, Marc Anthony, and Carolina Herrera, among many others. The portraits will be available El Museo's website www.elmuseo.org beginning the week of May 25th. A.C.E. For The Homeless 2009 Gala Kick Off Party : A.C.E. Kick Off Cocktail Party March 31, 2009. New York City. It is an honor to be one of the chairs of the upcoming event for the Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (A.C.E.), along with Barry Klarberg. Henry Buhl ; philanthropist, humanitarian, visionary and Founder of A.C.E., graciously opened the doors of his exquisite SoHo home for this evenings cocktail party. It is always a pleasure to visit Henry’s home which is laden with his ever changing collection of Hand art that tours the world. Tonight was special, it was the kick off party for the annual A.C.E. Award Dinner scheduled for June 3rd at Guastavino’s under the 59th Street bridge. This evenings cocktail party for over 100 guests was generously underwritten by Donna and Roys Poyiadjis. Rodney, a graduate from A.C.E.’s program spoke, proudly saying, “I was homeless for seventeen years, I now have a job thanks to A.C.E. I am proud to say that I just paid taxes for the first time in years, received an electric bill and got my first credit card.” His speech was inspiring and proved that our help does make a difference. We can help to rehabilitate a person giving him or her a new lease on life. This year, we are “Celebrating Hands at Work.” We are acknowledging the men and women of A.C.E.'s vocational training program. They work hard every day on community service projects while learning skills to reclaim their lives .The upcoming event usually raises about one million dollars for A.C.E., and is critical to A.C.E.’s annual fundraising efforts. Waterkeeper Alliance announced it first national anti-coal campaign called “The Dirty Lie.” Created by New York-based Mouth Creative Agency, the campaign’s goal is to create broader awareness of the destructiveness of coal—from its role in propping up an antiquated fossil-fuel-based economy to its adverse effects on the environment and the health of millions of Americans—and, ultimately, to bring about a change in national energy policy. The launch party was held at Greenhouse as part of the “Greenhouse Gives Back” campaign in which each month the eco-friendly nightclub highlights a different non-profit organization with an environmental initiative and promotes their ongoing efforts for sustainability. The event included video screenings on mountaintop mining in Appalachia, and a mini documentary that follows a young mother and her son as they get tested for mercury poisoning. The campaign’s hub is a website (www.thedirtylie.com) that houses video and editorial content and provide visitors with interactive tools to become anti-coal activists. The campaign will reach beyond the traditional environmental community by using the most up-to-date online viral marketing techniques, with the ultimate goal of galvanizing broad popular interest via the web. No other environmental organization taking on the coal industry has attempted something this innovative. The website’s core is a list of lies propagated by the coal industry, including the dirtiest lie of all: that coal can ever be clean. The site exposes the lies through scientific studies, legal facts, videos, and graphics, revealing the shocking truths about the damage done at every stage of the coal life cycle. BOYS TOWN NEW YORK SECOND ANNUAL BUILDING HOPE GALA : NEW YORK-THURSDAY,NOVEMBER 20, 2008, BOYS TOWN NEW YORK HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL BUILDING HOPE GALA at Capitale, 130 Bowery, at Grand Street, New York City, NY. The Building Hope Gala 2008 is Boys Town New York’s annual fundraiser. This year’s gala was hosted by NBC Sports’ Len Berman and featured performances by Island Def Jam artists Grammy-nominated Chrisette Michele and Karina Pasian. Special Guests included: Olympic Silver medalists from the U.S. Fencing team, Tim Morehouse and Jason Rogers, Miss New York Leigh-Taylor Smith and Dawn Angeliqué Richard of Danity Kane. Honorees: Somaly Mam, acclaimed author and human rights activist was the Spirit of Youth Award recipient and Paul Reilly, Chairman of Korn/Ferry International was the Career Achievement Award recipient. The gala also featured dinner, entertainment, a live and silent auction serves to heighten awareness and raise much needed funds in support of the organization’s intervention programs for at-risk, abused, abandoned and neglected girls and boys. ABOUT:Boys Town New York is a beacon of hope for New York’s children and families through its life-changing youth care programs, providing the right services at the right time based on a child’s or family’s needs. Since opening in 1991, Boys Town New York has served 3,889 children and families through its various programs. In 2007, 470 children received help from Boys Town New York's Treatment Family Services and Intervention and Assessment Services.
