Former Regan Book Editor & Author Bridie Clark Launches Her Highly-Anticipated Debut Novel "Because She Can" : Monday, February 12, 2007, 7-9PM, The SOHO Loft Residence of Marisa & Matt Brown. Former Regan Book Editor & Author Bridie Clark Launches Her Highly-Anticipated Debut Novel "Because She Can" chronicling the life of a beleaguered editor driven crazy by her tyrannical female boss (available through Warner Books starting on February 5th ). BECAUSE SHE CAN is an insider's no-holds-barred take on the book publishing world, is an outrageously funny, revealing novel about a woman who lands her dream job in book publishing – until she realizes that she's working for the industry's most notorious tyrant. Claire Truman's life has fallen into a holding pattern. She's been languishing away at a top New York publishing house, patiently waiting to be promoted and stretching her ridiculously small salary as far as it can go. Then, in just one night, Claire's life drastically changes. Fresh from an ugly breakup, she is dragged to a party and bumps into her crush from college: the legendarily hot Randall Cox, a man with friends in high places. When a high-powered publisher at a rival company calls her the next morning, Claire suddenly finds herself with a job worth three times her old salary. Unfortunately, her new boss, Vivian Grant, is even worse than industry gossip has led Claire to believe. From middle-of-the-night phone calls and over-the-top tantrums, Vivian piles on the work…and the abuse. Now, as Claire's new job demands more and more of her time and soul, will Randall Cox remain her Prince Charming? ABOUT BRIDIE CLARK: Since graduating from Harvard in 1999, Bridie Clark has worked in the editorial departments of Vanity Fair, New York, and Simon & Schuster. She was most recently an editor at ReganBooks. She lives in New York City with her husband. BECAUSE SHE CAN is her debut novel. Designers For Darfur : Friday, February 9, 2007, Roseland Ballroom, 239 West 52nd Street, New York, New York 10019; Tel: (212) 247-0200. DesignersForDarfur, founded in 2007 by designer Malcolm Harris (Mal Sirrah, Inc.) and model Lydia Hearst-Shaw (One Model Management), in association with Fashion Television and presenting sponsor Steve Madden, Inc., together hosted an unprecedented charity fashion show aimed to raise funds and awareness on behalf of the Save Darfur Coalition. This production represents hundreds of designers and the wider fashion community collectively banding together to show commitment and solidarity toward ending the atrocity of genocide currently taking place in Darfur. For this amazing event nearly 100 of America’s leading designers created one complete ensemble in Red, Yellow, Green or Black (or any combination of these symbolic colors of Africa) which were featured in a star-studded fashion show held at the nadir of New York Fashion Week. The fashion industry’s top models, hair and make-up artists as well as wardrobe stylists donated their time, talent and assistance to this worthy cause. Steve Madden's response to what compelled him to come on board as a presenting sponsor of DesignersForDarfur was simple and inspiring: “This is an issue of conscience and I’m doing what I can as a citizen of the world to shed light on this unimaginable genocide.” His support of this important charity event extends to advocacy in his more than 100 national retail stores, and he is donating 100% of all shoes for the philanthropic runway production. Current Situation in Darfur: According to recent estimates, at least 400,000 people have died in Darfur since the genocide began in February of 2003. It is impossible to know what the final number will be, however, as the genocide is still taking place today. What is known is that there are approximately 3.5 million men, women and children in the western Darfur region of Sudan trying to survive the Sudanese government-sponsored campaign of violence and forced starvation. These innocent victims are essentially on life support, their continued existence dependent on U.S. and international humanitarian aid and the presence of African Union peacekeepers. Despite the best efforts of the under-funded and under-manned African Union peacekeeping force, attacks have increased in recent months, leading to tens of thousands of new arrivals at refugee camps in Darfur and across the border in Chad. This increase in violence has put the humanitarian life-support system on life-support itself, and the nightmare scenario of a complete security collapse and the spike in death-rate that will surely follow now appears to be not a possibility, but a probability. UN official Jan Egeland (Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator) has previously said that he believes the death-rate could rise as high as 100,000 per month if security collapses. The situation in Darfur may soon test that theory.
