Over 900 honor Brian Duperreault, Former Chairman & CEO of ACE, Limited. (See: Insurance Journal:N.Y. Insurance Charitable Fund's First Grants Help Injured Soldiers, Urban Poor, Environment) The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) announced today that over $1.3 million was raised for Tri-State area organizations. Special guest Mayor Bloomberg joined 900 industry professionals and New York City leaders at the Waldorf-Astoria to award grants to the Wounded Warrior Project's Warrior to Work program, Riverkeeper and the New York City's Office of Financial Empowerment. WCBS's Kirstin Cole and former New York Ranger, Mike Richter, served as the evening's emcees. "The insurance industry is known for mitigating risk, but we hope that the IICF will be known for taking risks," said Ned Cloonan, Chairman, Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation. "The IICF will challenge conventional thinking about philanthropy and business by funding new and innovative ideas that address the problems confronting communities where we live and work." The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, the first industry-wide charitable initiative, funds organizations and public-private partnerships to find solutions to today's societal challenges. The Foundation's goal is to use the industry's intellectual capital, expertise in economic development and risk management skills to propel the insurance sector to the forefront of strategic philanthropy. The IICF awarded grants totaling $500,000 to the following organizations: New York City's Office of Financial Empowerment (OFE) Neighborhood Financial Empowerment Centers are part of an innovative new pilot program spearheaded by Mayor Bloomberg's Center for Economic opportunity and the Department of Consumer Affairs' Office of Financial Empowerment. This program will explore how the Centers can provide larger-scale, neighborhood-based financial counseling services, engaging people on individualized pathways out of poverty. With the IICF grant of $126,000, OFE is able to create the first of these Centers in the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx, with the ultimate goal of providing similar services citywide. Wounded Warriors Project Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) provides direct programs and support to service members who have been severely injured in current military conflicts. WWP's goal is to empower these young men and women to be the most successful, well-adjusted generation of disabled veterans in our nation's history. Ensuring access to employment is essential to achieving that goal. IICF awarded a grant of $200,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project Warriors to Work program for vocational training and job placement for injured men and women. Riverkeeper Over its 41-year history, Riverkeeper has led the battle to wrest control of the Hudson from polluters and is widely credited for having restored the river to its much improved condition and for safeguarding New York City's drinking water supply. Riverkeeper has established internationally recognized standards for waterway and watershed protection through their reliance on law, science and their unique brand of hard-hitting grassroots advocacy. Today, they are the proud model and mentor for nearly 160 other Waterkeeper programs on waterways across North America and around the globe. Riverkeeper received a grant of $150,000 to protect New York City's ecological integrity. The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation dinner, chaired by Martin J. Yvonne & Barry Cohen ~ Nguyen Thi Chau-Giang ("Chosan")~ Brian Grazer On behalf of the The American Vietnamese Friendship Organization(AVFO). The AVFO 's mission is to build strong cultural ties between the U.S. and Vietnam by providing gifted Vietnamese musicians with tools needed to develop their talent and thrive as artists. Your support will help these underprivileged but very talented students by raising funds for education, materials, training, and other special programs. The AVFO was founded in 2005 by Nguyen Thi Chau-Giang ("Chosan"). Chosan began her music studies at The Hanoi School of Music and Fine Arts at the age of eight. Her training there molded her into an accomplished pianist and painter. She continued her studies in New York City at The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. She has performed throughout the world and is now devoting her time to the AVFO. New York City, Dec. 2007. A beautiful panoramic view of New York City, an A-list international crowd, and an intimate classical music performance were the key ingredients in a recipe for success for the 3rd Annual American Vietnamese Friendship Organization (AVFO) Event. Barry Cohen, businessman and philanthropist and wife Yvonne graciously opened the doors of their home to host Chau-Giang Thi Nguyen "Chosan" and Brian Grazer. They recently hosted events for Henry Kissenger, Hillary Clinton, and Larry King.
Chosan, founder of the AVFO and beau, Brian Grazer, brought along the Imagine Entertainment creators from Hollywood; Ron Howard and Michael Rosenberg. The diverse guest list included Dr. Eric Kandel (Nobel Prize Winner), Vietnamese Ambassador Le Luong Minh, Malcolm Gladwell, David Carr, Tom Freston and wife Cathy, Greydon Carter (Editor of Vanity Fair) and wife Anna, Irving Schulman (Daffy’s), NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and his wife Veronica, Jim Cramer, John Lattanzio and Ann-Sofie, Elizabeth Waitt, Paula Froelich, Barry Tucker and other UN dignitaries and notable members of New York Society.
The eclectic mix of elite people was a ‘melting pot’ of minds and talents joined together with a common goal, the final ingredient, to help Chosan fulfill her dream to raise more money to buy music instruments for her poor but talented friends at the Hanoi School of Music and Fine Arts, where she began her studies at the age of 8. Chosan continued her studies in New York at The Julliard School and Manhattan School of Music. Sharing a heartfelt memory from her childhood, Chosan said, “I began playing on an old Gavo-French piano with missing keys and worn ivory that I received after the war ended. Mozart 's Sonata kept us living; it was the melody of a new beginning. I want to help other talented musicians in Vietnam to fulfill their dreams. Tonight’s music is symbolic of the friendship between Vietnam and America." Chosan brilliantly performed Rachmaninoff and Liszt, ending with one of her own compositions. An added treat was a surprise performance by the accomplished cellist Yoev Nir, who will be playing with The Israeli Symphony.
Performing throughout the world, Chosan has devoted her time to the AVFO. The AVFO has been working with BAVE (Business Alliance for Vietnamese Education). Their mission is to build strong cultural ties between the US and Vietnam by providing underprivileged but gifted Vietnamese musicians and students the tools needed to develop their talents. Chosan’s next scheduled performance will be in Los Angeles at The Disney Concert Hall on March 5th. To learn more please visit www.avfo.org. sara@blacktiemagazine.com

Coalition for a Secure Driver's License : Tuesday, December 4, 2007, The Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park, Ten West Street, New York, New York 10004 (212.344.0800). The Coalition for a Secure Driver's License, a New York based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, founded shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, honored Philanthropist Henry Buhl at the home of Herb London. The Coalition's members, which include 9/11 family members, recognize that driver's licenses played an instrumental role in the planning and execution of those attacks. The Coalition's single purpose is to advocate tighter identification requirements for individuals seeking driver's licenses within the 50 states, in order to prevent future terrorists from obtaining that critical form of ID. The Coalition educates American citizens, its legislators and the news media about the crucial need for license reform in this country. We have been enormously successful in bringing this important homeland security issue to the forefront of the national conversation.
